SAN JOSE, Calif., February 2, 2006 – Meriwest Credit Union, one of Silicon Valley’s largest financial institutions, has awarded scholarships to ten high school students for its annual scholarship competition.

The first place winners are Kevin Baldwin, resident of San Jose and Senior at Leigh High School; Andrew Souza, a resident of San Jose and a Junior at Branham High School; Natasha Iyer, a resident of San Jose and a Sophomore at St. Francis High School, and Aniruddha Deshmukh, a resident of Cupertino and a Freshman at Bellarmine College Preparatory.

Scholarships of $250 were awarded to Mr. Deshmukh and Natasha Iyer, $500 was awarded to Andrew Souza, and $1,000 was awarded to Kevin Baldwin.

Six others finished in second and third place and received scholarships of up to $500, depending on their class level. The second place winners are Julie Rower, a resident of Walnut Creek and a Senior at Northgate High School; Ariel Lewis, a resident of Tucson, AZ and a Junior at Sabino High School; Jessica Poon, a resident of Morgan Hill and a Sophomore at Live Oak High School and Jennifer Jenks, a resident of San Jose and a Freshman at Oakwood High School.

The third place winners are Erik Anderson, a resident of Tucson, AZ and a Senior at Tucson High Magnet School and Christina Cheng, a resident of Milbrae and a Junior at Mill High School.

Students were asked to prepare a 1,000-word essay on either of the following topics:

1) Is the Bay Area housing market going to continue to boom or will it bust?

or

2) How would you utilize a financial institution to insure you can own a home in the future?

A panel of five judges consisting of employees from Meriwest Credit Union evaluated each entry on accuracy, content, thoroughness, clarity of expression, grammar, and composition.

"Awarding scholarships to deserving students allows us to further support the communities we serve," said Sandra Citrigno, Corporate Communications Specialist at Meriwest. "We are proud to provide students with an opportunity to earn money toward education while learning the benefits of banking with a credit union, and Meriwest in particular."
