Meriwest Credit Union Sponsors the School of Rock on KFOX - School Choirs and Bands Perform Live on the Air

SAN JOSE, CA - Meriwest Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions serving Silicon Valley, the Greater Bay Area and Tucson, Arizona, announced today that, they have awarded $4,000 to the schools participating in the KFOX School of Rock Contest. The annual competition draws attention to the need for funding middle school and high school arts programs and also puts the talents of the youthful musicians and singers on display. Middle and High School bands and choirs compete against each other performing "Classic Rock" songs. The listeners at KFOX were encouraged to listen to the bands and choirs, then cast their votes online for the group they preferred. The winning bands and choirs are invited to perform live on KFOX's morning show with Greg Kihn and are given a Gold Record and a cash award for their efforts. Meriwest Credit Union served as the prime sponsor of the School of Rock.
In the Middle School Category, Castillero Middle School swept the band and choir competition. The Pioneer High School's Jazz Band was a winner along with the Gunn High School Choir. The bands and choirs performed "classic rock" songs and some contemporary jazz.
The winners played live on the Greg Kihn Morning Show on KFOX the week of April 21st. Each band and choir was awarded $5,000; $1,000 each from Meriwest Credit Union and $4,000 from an anonymous donor. The funds are given to each school's music booster clubs to support the arts programs. This sort of fund raising is critical right now due to the lack of funding for the arts in our schools.
