Meriwest Launches 2008 Essay Competition for High School Students - Cash Prizes are awarded

09/10/08

SAN JOSE, CA - Meriwest Credit Union, one of Silicon Valley's largest financial institutions, is helping students go to college. The Annual Essay Competition is designed to motivate and support high school students in grades 9-12 who are planning to continue their academic achievements in college.

Students must complete an essay of a minimum of a 1,000 words by answering the following question:
How have the recent turmoil in the housing market and rising consumer prices affected your generation? What can a credit union do to help prepare your generation for the future?

All students are eligible to win a cash prize as an incentive to save for their academic future. A total of $4,000 will be awarded to the top entrants in the contest.

"Meriwest believes the best hope for our future lies in the education of the next generation. The students in our high schools today are the community and financial leaders of tomorrow." said Christopher Owen, Chief Executive Officer of Meriwest Credit Union. "In our past essay competitions, our students have been both brilliant and creative in how they approached the subject matter in our essay questions. We admire the hard work they put into creating a winning entry. It is certainly our pleasure to provide a cash award for those students writing great essays."

The Annual Essay Competition is open to high school students between the ages of 13 to 18. Students must be a member of Meriwest Credit Union at the time of their entry in the contest. All entrants must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Students who are current Meriwest Credit Union members but do not live or work in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties or Tucson, Arizona are still eligible to enter the competition.
