Meriwest Credit Union Announces the Winners of the 2021 Video Essay Competition

San Jose, CA – May 12, 2021 – Meriwest Credit Union selected ten area high school students as winners of the High School Video Competition for their inventive videos answering the question “What new banking features, products or other innovations do you think would make banking easier, more fun, or more rewarding for your generation?” The Annual Competition is designed to motivate and support high school students in grades 9-12 who are planning to continue their academic achievements in college.

Jessica Lu,  Junior Class winner from San Jose High School created  ‘Mary West’ and employed a ‘TikTok’ video as “the best way  to teach a large number of people in a crash course format dedicated to short attention spans.”

Sophomore class winner, Shreyan Mitra, from Wilcox High School made clear in his video that his generation wants attractive banking innovation, “banking at the speed of Gen Z,” beginning with no fees, especially on Gen Z’s small accounts of today.

Marvin Tran, Freshman winner from Yerba Buena High School agrees, adding that all Gen Z really knows is  that they “have a certain amount of money and that we should not spend more than that amount,”  His recommended fix – create an app with added features to help Gen Z better manage that money.

Senior class winner Shelby Scott from Leland High School used the Meriwest app in her video to demonstrate that a convenient and reliable app was the way to make banking easier, more fun and more rewarding. Of course, she added more payment capabilities attractive to her generation. Shelby also spoke about the importance mobile phones have on financial education saying, “Phones are something that connects my entire generation and we will continue to use these handheld devices for the rest of our lives. So, creating a convenient and reliable app for financial education is a long-term benefit for my generation.”

“Congratulations to all the winners of 2021 Video Competition. This is our future for banking accessibility and convenience. They are our future. Great work!” said Julie Kirsch, Chief Executive Officer at Meriwest Credit Union.
