Meriwest Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions serving Silicon Valley, and the San Francisco Bay Area, was recognized by Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties with the Blue Diamond Award for its 2018 holiday donation and food drive. Meriwest employees donated over $10,000 and 2,000 pounds of food, which benefited hundreds of local families.

Meriwest has teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank for the last 13 years as part of its commitment to ending hunger and helping people in the community.

“We are excited to help do our part in fighting hunger in the communities where we work and live,” said Julie Kirsch, President and CEO of Meriwest.  “Despite the economic boom in Silicon Valley, it is a sad reality that 1 in 4 people is at risk of hunger.  Access to healthy food is a basic right and Second Harvest’s commitment to building a hunger-free community is very much aligned with our mission of people helping people”.

Leslie Bacho, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank, thanked Meriwest and other key partners at an awarding ceremony attended by over 200 supporters at Second Harvest’s Cypress location in San Jose. “Support from committed individuals and organizations like Meriwest help ensure kids and college students, families and seniors have the healthy food they need to thrive. I’m energized and grateful to honor such an amazing group of people who share our belief that hunger is unacceptable – and who are willing to do the hard work of making a difference.”

About Second Harvest Food Bank
Based in Silicon Valley, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is one of the largest food banks in the nation. Currently providing food to an average of 260,000 people every month, Second Harvest is a trusted community-based organization that was founded in 1974. Despite the immense wealth in Silicon Valley, and partly due to the high cost of living, hunger and malnutrition are pervasive. The Food Bank distributes nutritious food, including more fresh produce than almost any other food bank in the country, through a network of 309 nonprofit partners at 985 sites. Second Harvest is pursuing innovative efforts to increase access to food resources as it seeks to feed more hungry people each month. To reach more people, it advocates for anti-hunger policies and connects those in need to federal nutrition programs and other food resources.
