How to Choose the Right Checking Account
Choosing the right checking account starts with understanding how you use your money every day. Whether you’re focused on earning more, avoiding fees, or keeping things simple, the best checking account should match your spending habits, cash flow, and financial goals.
Start with How You Use Your Account
If your checking account is where your paycheck lands and your bills get paid, look for features that reward everyday activity—such as earning dividends, ATM fee rebates, or early access to direct deposit. If you mainly want a place to manage expenses with minimal requirements, a basic checking option may be the best fit.
Consider Fees and Minimums
Many checking accounts charge monthly fees or require minimum balances to avoid them. A good checking account should keep fees to a minimum—or eliminate them altogether—so more of your money stays in your account. Understanding fee structures upfront can help you avoid surprises later.
Look for Ways to Earn More
Some checking accounts go beyond the basics by offering dividends or rewards when you meet simple monthly criteria. If you regularly use your debit card or receive direct deposit, a high‑yield checking account may allow you to earn more on balances you already keep for everyday use.
Think About Access and Convenience
Easy access to your money matters. Features like surcharge‑free ATM access, digital banking tools, mobile deposit, and bill pay can make managing your account faster and more convenient—whether you’re banking at home or on the go.
Match the Account to Your Bigger Picture
If you tend to keep larger balances or want your money to earn more while remaining accessible, you might consider pairing your checking account with a savings or money market account. Many members use checking for daily expenses and keep excess funds in accounts designed for higher balances and growth.
Compare and Choose with Confidence
The right checking account should fit naturally into your financial routine. By comparing features like fees, earning potential, digital tools, and access to your funds, you can choose an account that supports both your daily needs and long‑term goals.

What is the difference between a checking account and a money market account?
A checking account is designed for everyday spending and bill payments, offering easy access through debit cards, checks, and digital banking. A money market account is designed to help you earn more on higher balances while still keeping your funds accessible, typically offering higher dividend rates than traditional savings.
-
Does Meriwest offer a checking account that earns interest?
Yes. Meriwest’s Smart Rewards Checking lets you earn dividends on qualifying balances while enjoying everyday checking features like debit card access, ATM surcharge rebates, and digital banking tools.
-
What happens if I keep a higher balance in my account?
If you regularly maintain a higher balance, you may benefit from a money market account rather than a standard checking or savings account. Meriwest offers money market options, including SecureEdge Money Market, which provides competitive yields and extra insurance, while keeping your funds accessible.
-
Can I have both a checking account and a money market account?
Absolutely. Many members use a checking account for everyday spending while keeping excess funds in a money market account to earn more on higher balances—making it easy to access money when needed while maximizing earnings.
-
How do I decide which account is right for me?
If you want easy access for daily spending, a checking account may be the right choice. If you want to earn more on savings while keeping funds liquid, a money market account may be a better fit. Meriwest offers both, so you can choose—or combine—accounts based on your goals.
